In 1975, author kurt saxon began writing a newsletter called the survivor. In this publication, he talked about pioneer skills and early technologies. He is often credited for coining the term “survivalist. ”in the 1970s, the terms “survivalist” and “retreater” were often used interchangeably. However, they soon began to differentiate, and survivalist became associated with a more combative style of preparedness. Later, saxon wrote controversial books on how to make homemade weapons such as bombs. By contrast, a retreater was someone who tried to avoid conflict and become invisible. Numerous other books about economic collapse and disaster preparedness were published during this decade, and by the 1980s, survivalism had become a multibillion dollar industry.

when ben hansen was organizing 2018’s edition of preppercon, the country’s premiere expo for preparedness and survival, he knew that he had to do something big and amazing.
The previous year, for example, he had commissioned a hurricane simulator. “hurricanes and tornadoes can be scary things for people,” hansen, the conference’s chief of media and entertainment, said in a recent phone interview. “but i wanted people to understand that if you understand the threat, you’re not as afraid. ”so, in the parking lot of salt lake city’s mountain america expo center, h ansen and his team built a contraption that strapped people down in front of a fan boat mounted inside a giant container, creating winds that blew up to 140 miles an hour so they could experience life inside a storm.
When people think of preparing for the worst, they usually think a lot of gear, tools, food and water to start off with. While this is of course a large part of prepping, you also want to make sure your finances are in order. If you have any sort of credit card debt, do your best to pay it down. Go to the bank and make sure that you have some cash stashed away. If you find yourself having to bug out, having a stash of cash will serve you well on the road. Also, things such as coming up with a will, just in case something happens to you, is important for the future of your loved ones.
